Know what you own

An up-to-date record of your possessions, with approximate values and date of purchase, can make a huge difference when it comes to the difficult task of trying to assess loss from a fire or burglary.

You can accomplish this by going through your home with a camera or camcorder and capturing all the contents on film. Alternatively, you can make a list of all your possessions by referring to a home inventory checklist. This may seem time consuming, but it only needs to be done once, with occasional updates to add new things as they are acquired. Then keep this record somewhere secure outside the home, such as a safe deposit box

When your home is damaged, first things first:

Your safety: In cases of fire, burglary and other potential life safety situations, make sure that you and your family are out of danger.

Prevent further damage: In the case of a broken pipe, turn off the water supply. If your home has been broken into, seal the point of entry. In the case of a fire, call the fire department right away. Do not dispose of damaged property without your insurance adjuster's prior approval.

Notify the proper authorities: In the case of burglary or theft, contact the police at once.

Start to gather information: You will be required to supply information about the circumstances of your claim, as well as reasonable evidence to justify the amount claimed. Your insurance provider will want to know exactly what was lost/damaged/stolen, when you acquired it, and what you paid for it.

Making the claim: When you are ready to make a claim, just call us. We will walk you through the rest of the process. If at any time you are unhappy with the claims process, let us know. We will intervene on your behalf to ensure that you are treated fairly.
